UNOPS St. Maarten Prison

CSI led the architectural design and multidisciplinary coordination for the new St. Maarten Penitentiary Center, a landmark infrastructure project aimed at enhancing correctional facilities and strengthening the island’s public infrastructure. Developed under the leadership of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and funded by the World Bank, this project represents a significant milestone in Sint Maarten’s reconstruction and long-term development efforts.

The project presented both technical and social challenges, requiring a design approach that balances security, functionality, sustainability, and human dignity. Every aspect of the facility was carefully planned to create safe, efficient, and resilient spaces capable of serving the community for decades to come. Particular attention was given to durability and performance in a demanding tropical environment characterized by hurricanes, intense rainfall, high humidity, and coastal exposure.

CSI worked in close collaboration with AREA Associates, which served as the local consulting and representative firm throughout the project. This partnership ensured full compliance with local regulations, standards, and permitting requirements. AREA Associates was also responsible for the formal submission and physical delivery of the complete project documentation, including the full drawing package and technical deliverables.

This development stands as a testament to international collaboration, technical excellence, and a shared commitment to building resilient public infrastructure for the future of Sint Maarten.
